  • Pinpoint:
    • A USI developed spam filter that utilizes a human compiled list of URLs associated with know spam.
  • SURBL
    • A publicly available list of URLs associated with known spam complied by a 3rd party.
  • Lateral Pass
    • In the event a server makes the determination that it will be unable to deliver a message it automatically “passes” that message to another server cell for delivery. This prevents a delivery failure should a server inadvertently be placed on a blacklist.
  • ShieldWall
    • Realtime Black List based on pattern analysis
  • Spamvertise
    • The practice of using spam to “advertise” a product or service
  • RBL
    • Realtime Black List
  • Whitelist
    • A colection of entities (IP addresses, Domains, People...) that have been predetermined as "OK" or authorized. Any entity placed on a whitelist will bypass the filtering process selected.
  • Blacklist
    • A colection of entities (IP addresses, Domains, People...) that have been predetermined as "BAD" or unauthorized. Any entity placed on a blacklist will automatically be captured by the filtering process selected.
  • Honey Pot
    • A fictitious email address used to "trap" unwanted spam and create a signature for comparison against messages delivered to legitimate email addresses. Since these addresses are fictitious they should, in theory, never receive email. Any email received therefore has a high probability of being unsolicited spam. Once identified and verified, a signature similar to those used to identify viruses is created and that message can be filtered from the system.
  • Slicing
    • Term used to describe the progressively restrictive filtering process. With each "slice" more messages are filtered and fewer messages remain. This allows for the process intensive filtering to happen only on those messages that have passed all other lower level, non process intensive, filters.
