This page is a description of all of the searching functions of the quarantined message viewer.

There are 9 different types of searches you can perform when looking for messages. You can search the "to" and the "from" fields for exact matches, prefix matches, and suffix matches and You can search the "subject" field for exact matches, prefix matches, and word matches. Searches are not case-sensitive, however when searching for word matches in the "subject" field no non-alpha characters will be searched for, meaning that all characters that are not letters will either be ignored or turned into a space (depending on the character). Definitions and examples are listed below.

Prefix Matches A prefix match is when the first part of what you have given matches the beginning of the field. For example, if you're doing a prefix search for "jon" in the "To" field, it will return all quarantined messages that were sent to usernames beginning with "jon". To search for prefix matches you must input what you want to find followed by an asterisk (a *). To do the search from the example above you would type in "jon*" and select "To" from the menu. Suffix Matches A suffix match is the opposite of the prefix match in that if what you have given matches the end of the field, it is returned. For example, if you're doing a suffix search for "@domain.com" in the "From" field, it will return all quarantined emails that were sent from anyone with an email address with username@domain.com. To search for suffix matches start your search with an asterisk (a *) followed by what you are searching for. To do the search from the example above you would type in "*@domain.com" and select "From" from the menu.

Note: You cannot search for suffix matches in the "Subject" field and you also cannot combine a prefix and suffix match. Exact Matches An exact search is when you give exactly what you want to find. In order to do an exact search you merely must omit the asterisk (*) from the beginning and end of your search. If you include the asterisk somewhere in the middle, it will try to match that character. For example if you want to do an exact search for "this is a subject" in the "Subject" field, you would type in "this is subject" and select "Subject" from the menu. Word Matches Word matches are used to find quarantined messages that have a certain word in their subject. Word matches can ONLY be performed on the "Subject" field and only words with five or more characters can be searched for. Also, you can search for multiple words. This will return emails that have ALL of the words in their subject. Again, all the words have to be five characters or longer. In order to search for word matches you must select "Subject" from the menu and click the "Contains" checkbox.

Word matches can only be performed on letters, not numbers or symbols. Some symbols are converted to spaces while others are simply dropped. Below is a table of characters that are dropped and those that are converted into spaces.

Converted to space: . , ; / - _ | : @ +

Dropped: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 ! # $ % ^ & * ( ) [ ] { } = " ' < > \
